In conjunction with the annual Hungry Ghosts month observed by ethnic Chinese the world over, a local newspaper in Malaysia interviewed 19 year old Pinky Loo about her career as a spirit entertainer.
The Chinese believe that during the Hungry Ghosts month, the gates of hell will open and Hungry Ghosts will be free to roam the earth. To avoid harm and bad luck, the Chinese community would appease the spirits with food, music and entertainment.
Pinky earns 150 Ringgit (approximately $45) per night although she has heard that some singers get up to 1000 Ringgit (approximately $290).
"The stage shows were traditionally meant to entertain both the believers and the spirits. As long as there is entertainment, I doubt it would offend anyone, especially the spirits" Pinky was quoted saying"The songs are mostly in Mandarin, although, occasionally I do sing a Britney Spears number" Pinky Said
