This is an Axolotl (pronounced Ax-oh-lot-ul), scientific name Ambystoma mexicanum. The Axolotl are often referred to by the Australians and New Zealanders as the Mexican Walking Fish, although the Axolotl is not a fish, but an amphibian. It is a species of the salamander.
The Axolotl is native to both two high altitude freshwater lakes Lake Xochimilco, and Lake Chalco at the basin of Mexico, . The Axolotl is now on the CITES endangered species list.
